Your Soul's Truth

What if We Decide to Stand for Joy?

What if 357,233,212 Americans woke up tomorrow and got out of bed and sat down at the kitchen table to eat their Cheerios, and read something in the paper about intolerance, or cruelty, or racism, or corruption, and what if all 357,233,212 of us simultaneously stood up, put the paper in the recycle bin, dumped our Cheerios down the sink, and said, “No more.

Not no more Cheerios, but no more judgment, no more hate, no more telling other people how to live their lives, no more waiting for someone else to give us permission to live ours.

What if all those people said,

No more waiting for life to get great when I die.

No more waiting for life to get great when the Democrats get reelected.

No more waiting for life to get great when I find my soul mate.

No more waiting for life to get great when I lose twenty pounds.

No more waiting for life to get great when my husband/boss/president gets his act together.

What if all 357,233,212  of us looked at ourselves in the mirror without judgment, got dressed without judgment, and went to work wearing 100% of our power and none of our ego? So we didn’t judge anybody, including and especially ourselves, all day long. We didn’t speak to anyone in a disrespectful way, and we didn’t allow ourselves to be disrespected?

Please don’t speak to me that way. It feels disrespectful.

I’m going to step out of the room now, boss. When you can discuss this respectfully, I’m willing to continue the conversation.

What if we respected our physical bodies by not eating with one hand on the mouse?

What if we left work on time?

What if we started minding our own business more and let our friends and family make their own life decisions, even if we know  they’re going to totally screw it up without our help, but it doesn’t really matter because we’re finally taking that painting class we’ve been longing to take?

What if we walk down the street and make a point of smiling at anyone wearing a hoodie or a hijab? What if we stop and ask, “How are you today?” when we see the homeless man in his corner?

What if we go home and look in the mirror and tell ourselves, “I love you, but I don’t agree with some of your decisions,” and then go and throw the Ben and Jerry’s in the trash and start washing the asparagus?

What if the buck stops here and now, with us, with you and me–except that I am my responsibility and you aren’t.

What if 357,233,212 Americans decided to stop talking, stop judging, stop enabling, stop rescuing, stop making excuses —and start becoming the change they want to see in the world?
