Buyer Beware! How to Pick a Good Psychic

My dog Rafi sleeping in the milk room

I met a psychic recently. S/he took a look at a picture of my dog sleeping like a puppy on the floor of the milkroom in my barn.

“It’s the milk of the mother,” s/he said. “That’s why he’s sleeping there.”

Ummm, no.  The cement floor is cool and besides, he’s been trained that his job is to rest quietly while I’m milking the cow.

I met a psychic recently. “I used to talk to angels,” s/he said. “Until I had a big spiritual awakening and now I’m connected directly to Source.”

So, like, we humans can outgrow the angels?

I met a psychic recently. S/he shook my hand, and said, “I see your grandparents standing behind your shoulder. They’re with you all the time.”

I forget which shoulder and which grandparents, but it doesn’t matter, because my inner wisdom immediately said, “No. That’s not true. And besides, I didn’t ask you to read me!”

I met a psychic recently. S/he said, “You wear so much blue because there’s so much water in your chart.”

I’m an Aries sun with a Taurus moon and possibly Leo rising. And I’m an avatar of Archangel Michael, whose energy is cobalt blue.Water? Not so much. And besides, I didn’t ask you to read me!

Fuzzy psychics. Unfortunately, there are lots of them out there. As the human collective begins to gather momentum in our journey towards the new earth, more and more people are coming online. It’s really exciting to connect with our inner divinity—to open up to our psychic abilities. But it takes more than just some empathy and a dose of intuition to be a good professional psychic. Psychics actually need rigorous training, just like any other helping professional. Unfortunately, not all psychics get that training.

A good psychic reading can be life changing. But a bad reading can be worse than a waste of your money. Here’s what you need to know before you fork over your money and your power!

Here are a few warning signs of psychics you might want to avoid. If you have other warning signs to add to this list, I’d love to hear them!  Leave a public comment below this post, or email me privately at alix@yoursoulstruth.com.

Warning Sign of a Bad Psychic: I Know it All!

We are all still learning, and when we die, we’ll come back in a fresh body and keep learning. Unfortunately, when a person carries too much unhealed ego, it’s hard for that person to admit what they don’t know.

If you meet a psychic that strikes you as egotistical, watch out! Ego is inversely proportional to Spirit. When we stand in unhealed ego energy (either arrogance or insecurity), we are not standing in alignment with our divinity. We are not aligned with Spirit.

This is important for psychics because we only receive true insight to the extent that we are connected to and aligned with Spirit. When we are fully aligned, ego is quiet and divine insight comes through loud and clear. When we are out of alignment, we either can’t read, or we get information that is not fully trustworthy.

Warning Sign of a Bad Psychic: Unsolicited Information

If you meet a psychic and he or she immediately starts “reading” you—giving you unsolicited intuitive information—be very, very wary. That’s very poor etiquette, in my opinion—it’s an invasion of your privacy for someone to read you without permission. It also tells me that person has weak or non-existent personal energy boundaries. Kind of like getting help from a doctor with bad breath or stained clothing, it does not inspire confidence!

Now it does happen that an ethical reader will get an intuitive hit for someone they meet, even if they’re not trying to connect with your spirit. In that case, the reader should ask permission to share the insight they received. I often say, “The angels gave me a message for you. Would you like to hear it?” And if it’s a personal message, I share it privately.

Warning Sign of a Bad Psychic: Your Gut Says, NO!

If you ever have a psychic tell you something that feels really untrue, trust yourself. You may get a strong No! response to a piece of information and if you do, trust yourself. At other times, a good psychic might tell you something you don’t want to hear in the middle of an otherwise good experience. In that case, reserve judgment on the issue in question, because they might be absolutely right! It’s been my experience that clients can love 99% of a session with me, and then cherry pick out the pieces of information they disagree with. Often those are just the pieces they’re not ready to face.

Signs of a Good Psychic

A good psychic reader is here to serve. He or he is committed to the highest good of psychic, client, and planet. He or she will come across as very ethical, client focused, and trustworthy. While we all have our moments of confusion or insecurity, a good reader will be more about service and less about ego. A good reader will typically have had some rigorous training. He or she should know how to keep themselves, and you, safe and protected during the reading experience.

If such a reader gets blocked, he or she will have tools to work through the block and get the reading back on track. At the very least, they will be willing to admit what they can’t see. I’ve never had to refund a client’s money, but I’d never hesitate to do so if I felt I couldn’t deliver what they’d paid for.

Three Questions to Ask a Psychic

If you are interviewing a prospective psychic, you might ask these questions to help you get a feel for the quality of their reading.

  1. What training have you had?
  2. What do you do when you find  yourself blocked and unable to receive information during a reading?
  3. What is your energetic safety protocol before, during, and after the session?

One Thing You Should Never Give a Psychic

All of these issues aside, many folks pick a psychic because they feel drawn to work with them. That works out fine, most of the time. But there is one thing you should never give a psychic, and yet it happens hundreds of times a day. I’m talking about your power. Please, no matter how much money you pay a psychic—keep your power!

I cringe when I hear folks ask psychics whether or not to leave a marriage. I’m not answering that question for anyone! Yes, a good psychic can read the energy around a relationship—looking at the soul contracts between the two people, the energies each person puts into and draws out of the relationship space. A good psychic can offer much clarity. But the big decisions of your life are yours to make, and no psychic can do that for you.

A final thought—the best way to try out a new psychic is with a mini-reading. Getting a reading at a festival is one way to do that, and getting a mini-reading over the phone or in writing works too. Notice and honor your reactions to  the person and the information they share with you.

I’m happy to answer any questions you may have about choosing or working with a psychic, whether you’re considering working with me or with someone else. Just drop me a (public) comment below this post or send me a private email at alix@yoursoulstruth.com.

Namaste,

  1. I think I have strong connections to a few very special to me spirits so I often am told that people are channeling one of them for me. The first few times this was perfect because I was aching for them in those moments. I have a harder time when it suddenly becomes part of a pitch of some sort. As if they are trying to prove their abilities. Thanks for this Alix! I think your clues are good.

    1. As in, the psychics are trying to prove themselves to you? That’s not in and of itself a bad thing, as it could give you more faith in the psychic. Or it could stem from the psychic’s unhealed ego, aka need to prove themselves, to be validated. That’s kind of an icky vibe. Thanks for your comment, Ellen!
